Gerard Smulevich: Constructed Landscapes at WUHO Gallery

Constructed Landscapes, an exhibition of photographs by Gerard Smulevich, opens Thursday, November 7th at WUHO Gallery. A public opening and reception for the artist will take place from 6PM to 8PM on the 7th; the exhibition will run through November 24th.

In this latest collection of images, architect and photographer Gerard Smulevich attempts to identify photographic moments that express disarray, vulnerability and dysfunction, while potentially offering a means to understanding the substantive qualities underlying our urban landscapes.

Smulevich’s selective use of the photographic frame excludes, collapses, compresses and captures instances taken from the infinite accidents found in existing urban landscapes. The result, in the artist’s words, is “alternative reality distilled through a controlled, precise optical distortion provided by a camera lens.” Through this willful omission of everything excluded from the framed view, qualities and conditions that would have otherwise lain hidden from the un-filtered human eye are revealed.

Thus, in Constructed Landscapes, reality is optically reverse-engineered into suggestive ideas about our built and un-built environments; but those ideas can only coalesce (and fulfill the condition of an act of art) when reimagined by you, the viewer.
