John Elgin Woolf: Master of Hollywood Regency

The Palos Verdes Art Center is pleased to present, John Elgin Woolf: Master of Hollywood Regency. The exhibition will run from March 20-May 24, 2015 at the non-profit Palos Verdes Art Center with an opening reception, March 19, from 6-9 pm.

Legendary architect and the father of “Hollywood Regency” style, John Elgin Woolf, changed Southern California’s residential landscape during the 40s, 50s, and 60s with his elegant, innovative, and visionary designs.  Woolf, known as the “Architect to the Stars,” designed homes for Carey Grant, Errol Flynn, Judy Garland and Bob Hope as well as an addition of the Beverly Hills Hotel.

A 2-month architectural exhibition at the Palos Verdes Art Center will showcase rare artifacts from the private office of this visionary designer who first-handily developed Hollywood glamour for the rich and famous.  Woolf set the stage for Hollywood’s elite in an era that never goes out of style.

It’s been said John Elgin Woolf and his partner “established a new vocabulary for glamorous movie-star living; they synthesized 19th-century French, Greek Revival and Modernist touches into a heady mixture that has since been christened Hollywood Regency, which foreshadowed aspects of postmodernism” -David Colman, NY Times, 2004
