Joseph Umali Fernandez’s artist residency at Trunk Gallery will culminate in a solo exhibition entitled Strong In Pieces. An opening reception for the exhibition, which runs through March 23rd, will take place Saturday, March 2nd from 6PM to 9PM. On Sunday, March 10th, from 6PM to 8PM, Fernandez will give an artist talk and free wire sculpture workshop in the gallery.
Fernandez is a southern California sculptor and ceramicist. He creates impressionistic sculptures of the human body and of animals by manipulating wire and found materials. Constructed with bits of glass and ceramics of varied size and prominence, and intertwined with wire of different gauge and hue, every facet of his work connects in an ever-expanding linkage of shape and color.
Observing Fernandez at work, one can’t help but think of a shaman – a person imbued with ancient power and wisdom who is able to give life, guide spirits and has the power of healing. Fernandez shapes and molds the materials with infinite mastery. Guided by an inner vision, he weaves life into figures created from lengths of wire and discarded materials.
