Mark Daybell takes us to a place we all know – one that constantly barrages us and teases us – the cult of celebrity. Daybell, who is Department Chair of the Graphic and Multimedia Design Department at College of the Canyons in Valencia, California, will be presenting new work alongside selected work from his oeuvre that examines the myth of celebrity by employing photography, video, installation, text and performance.

In the context of celebrity’s reliance on images, it encourages voyeuristic indulgence. As such, Daybell’s works are a voyeur’s journey through media and culture’s false collective belief as it relates to the myth of celebrity. Deconstructing celebrity through the perceptions of “exclusivity”, “cool”, and “glamour”, he exposes celebrity’s influence on society’s conscious and unconscious behaviors, attitudes and desires.

Daybell challenges representations of celebrity and its creation of an insider-outsider culture – one which exemplifies the power of exclusion. He does so with an irony-veiled methodology that the casual observer is most likely to miss out on all except the most obvious of Daybell’s intentions.
