In Monolith, William Wray transforms old machinery and everyday street scenes into the artfully transcendental. Influences like Monet and Emile Gruppe shine through, but Wray distinguishes himself with a unique modernist touch. Wray’s technique trumps the limitations of medium: through heavy, often geometrical applications of oil-paint, one can really see all three dimensions of the object depicted. Wray’s works are not just paintings; they are chunks of the outside world transported onto canvas. It seems that for him, the rusted remains of our technology-driven world and the art-deco details of New York’s iconic skyline are modern day monoliths, as full of cultural significance as the standing stones of pre-Christian civilizations.

In Painted Horizon, Thomas Frontini creates rare scenes where sperm whales, narwhals and all manner of brightly plumed birds abound. The brightness of Frontini’s palette and the strangely endearing figures he paints make for an immersive escape from our harshly defined reality. Frontini’s world, in contrast, almost can’t be pinned down: it’s somewhere between illustrations from some old boy-scout nature guide and an asteroid that Saint-Exupery’s Little Prince could have visited. Freedom of form and vast stretches of sky imbue his delicately rendered subjects with an unusual sense of power and vivacity. One might even regard Frontini’s paintings as extra dimensional fables from beyond, complete with pleasantly hazy lessons.
